How to clean velvet shoes and keeping them looking as good as new.

Christmas is already here followed by all its social events, family meals and celebrations. It´s the right moment to wear those stunning velvet shoes that you completely love and can´t use daily…but.. Oh, wait, what about cleaning them? And, furthermore… looking good? Relax! We will explain step by step how to make them look as good as new for you and all your family.

First of all take note all you will need. They are very common items and very handy at home. Soft bristle brush.

• Creamy detergent.
• A jur or a small glass of water.

For a normal cleaning “set up”, brush gently the shoe, in the same direction to lift the nap, and taking care the bristles do not bend. If they do, we are brushing too strong and we can damage the material. On this first stage, we will just remove the dust for a deepest cleaning.

Secondly, mix in a glass detergent with some water and lather. Put some of this lather over the brush bristles and rub gently. Next, wipe clean - avoid to leave lint over the shoe- and let it air dry. On this stage, the velvet come alive and small spots will be removed easily. NOTE: do not use hot water or too much quantity

To check if the spot has gone, wait 20 minutes until the shoe is dried. Repeat if necessary.

For difficult and resistant stains, such as food or greasy ones, the best you can do is to sprinkle talcum powder on the spot quickly to absorb the dirt. If you can´t make it right away, clean them with water and a little bit of alcohol as soon as you arrive at home. Scrub the mixture over the spot with a soft sponge and dry with a clean cloth afterwards.

But, as with everything in life, the best way to keep your velvet shoes is taking good care of them and prevention. As simple as putting them away in a shoes bag, after using, and brushing them gently often. Just to protect them from dust and humidity.
