How to clean glitter and shiny shoes

Simple tips to keep the shine looking like new

This season, glitter, metallic tones and gemstone details are everywhere. They add a fun and festive touch to any outfit and are often your child’s favourites for special occasions (even though they’d happily wear them to school too).

At Pisamonas you’ll find plenty of styles following these trends. And that part is easy. The challenge is keeping them looking perfect until they outgrow them. How do you clean these types of shoes without dulling the shine or loosening the glitter? Let’s go step by step:

How to clean shoes with glitter or gemstone embellishments

The most important thing when cleaning glitter shoes is identifying how the glitter is attached.

When dealing with glitter inlays, you must be very careful with dirt (especially mud and dust) that gets trapped between the glitter pieces.

  • First, remove any surface dirt. A great option is using a clean, soft-bristled, completely dry makeup brush. Use light strokes in one direction to avoid pulling off any glitter.
  • For more stubborn stains, once the dust is removed you can finish the cleaning with a microfibre cloth slightly dampened with water and mild soap, or even a cotton bud. Always use gentle dabbing motions and dry immediately.
  • No direct water: avoid wetting glitter as it will peel off quickly.
  • Set the shine: if you notice some glitter coming loose, you can spray a little hairspray from about 20 cm away to fix the glitter without damaging it.
  • Protect them: you can store the shoes separately in cotton bags to prevent glitter from rubbing off.

How to clean metallic-coloured shoes

Metallic finishes, although seemingly resistant, tend to scratch or lose shine if not properly cared for. How can you clean them to prevent this?

  • Metallic materials shine more with regular care. Wiping the shoes after each wear is the simplest and most effective way to keep them looking their best.
  • Gentle cleaning. Use a microfibre cloth slightly dampened with water and mild soap, avoiding any harsh rubbing. Then dry with a soft cloth.
  • Home trick: you can enhance the metallic shine by applying a tiny amount of petroleum jelly with a cotton pad, then buffing off the excess with a soft cloth.
  • Avoid polishes or leather creams, as they dull the metallic finish.
  • Avoid leaving shoes in direct sunlight, as the sun fades colours.
