Do you know their origin? Let us tell you!
Few shoes have lasted as long as espadrilles. Generation after generation, espadrilles are the most used casual summer shoe by parents and children, not only in their most classic version but also in bolder models adapted to current trends. But do you know when and where they originated? Well, no less than 4,000 years ago in ancient Egypt. The Nile River, as it crossed the entire country, favoured the rapid growth of jute, an herbaceous plant typical of hot and humid climates whose fibres are used to manufacture the sole and base of espadrilles. Being a cool, light, resistant, and affordable shoe, its use quickly became popular across the Mediterranean, reaching Spain at the beginning of the 14th century. Soldiers of the Catholic Monarchs' army used them as part of their usual attire, as did peasants and common people.
Gradually, numerous espadrille factories began to proliferate in Spain, becoming the most used footwear, not only by those with fewer resources but also by the upper classes, eventually becoming the proper footwear for many of our country's regional costumes.
In the mid-20th century, many celebrities popularised a more glamorous use of traditional espadrilles, such as Grace Kelly or Brigitte Bardot. Even Picasso and Dalí wore them both for work and in their daily lives!
Today, espadrilles are the star footwear for children and adults alike! There is no doubt, they are an eternal classic!
Adjustable espadrilles for toddlers: the most practical choice!
Although their original design is closed at the front and back, covering both the toes and the heel, many people choose to wear them as mules for quickness. However, for a smarter look or for those little ones who haven't fully mastered walking, it's best to wear them properly secured! With this in mind, at Pisamonas you have a model with a back strap to adjust them to the heel, preventing them from slipping off while walking and making it easier for little ones to put them on themselves!

Don't know how to clean jute and canvas? It's very easy!
As they are among the most used shoes by your child during the summer and mid-season, it is normal for espadrilles to get dirty. Furthermore, if they are in light colours like white, beige, or yellow, stains are more visible. Even though they are summer shoes often used in casual contexts, keeping them clean so your boy looks perfect at all times is very easy! Simply rub them with a small brush dampened with water and neutral soap over the stained surface until it disappears - and that's it! If the dirt is more stubborn, repeat the process as many times as necessary and let them dry in the shade so the colour doesn't fade. They will look like new!
